Master Sergeant Newell acquitted

We previously discussed the court-martial of Master Sergeant Newell for allegedly murdering an unarmed Afghan detainee and then mutilating the corpse by cutting off an ear. See here, here, and here. Yesterday a court-martial found Master Sergeant Newell not guilty of all charges and specs, as reported by this thorough article from today's Fayetteville Observer.

Sounds to me like the crim law shop at Bragg needs a spring cleaning. First Martinez, now this. This is worse than Martinez in my opinion b/c Newell sounds like a great soldier, yet we charge him with murder when he wastes a bad guy...pencil-pushin' lawyers strike again.

There is no "one" crim law shop at Bragg. There are several separate CAs, SF Cmd being one of them. They did a very professional job in Newell. They brought on an experienced AUSA to be TC. AWESOME good soldier evidence came in for MSG. He is not a typical "killer." He has lived most of his life in places many of us would not dare go, and "ate things that would make a billy goat puke." After years of stress and death, this happened. He is no Ted Bundy. He is a guy who made sacrifices 99.9% of the Country would never make. I think the panel got it right.

A cynic would open a betting poll for how long until his travel claims are reviewed and he gets Art 15ed for a taxi slip...
